  • Great acting, quite a mediocre story

This is popcorn movie done backwards (pun intended). It has everything popcorn movie does not. Fantastic acting, lots and lots of deep thinking and carefully developed philosophical approach to time and meaning of life. Well... and that is it. In a nutshell (another pun intended) this is a movie about benign aliens who actually need humans help. They arrive to Earth in 12 ships. Stay they long enough to cause riots and military tension (riots that likely killed thousands in the process) and then they deliver a message that they will need help in 3000 years and in order for humans to believe (?) that, some of humans have to re-wire their brains to perceive time in nonlinear fashion, by learning alien language. What a pile of garbage is that?!!! 1. How humans can help and what they can help with? 2. Why not send one ship to actually learn HUMAN language and communicate the request? 3. Why not to establish one ship on the ground so all nations can send representatives who will learn alien language in controlled environment and have that knowledge verified without any escalation? Overall, I enjoyed the movie. Adams is great actress, concept was fine, execution failed and all other actors were totally meaningless. Rent it.
  • Terrible Movie

Should be 99 cents to buy. I love Sci-Fi but this movie was not good at all. I kept waiting for that moment. I fell asleep the first time then I watched again. It has so many flaws. If learning the language gives you the ability to see future then why was she seeing it before learning the language? These beings are meant to be developed - but they cannot communicate? The whole movie was based on this, in the end she speaks to the Chinese but we have no clue what she said. Such a terrible movie. I didn't enjoy it at all.
  • This is how movies should be written

To tell a moving, thoughtful story that will make you think about it afterwards. Its not an alien apocalyptic movie, by no means an action film, but is probably one of my favorite films. The alien species was well thought, the way they presented language as a means of technology was very interesting.
  • Stunning

From it’s message, to the cinematography and the score, this is one that will stay with me for a while.

I have to admit it wasnt the best movie I've seen, but it was worth watching. It was something different, held my attention. The ending could have been more detailed, it left you guessing etc. But over all it was a nice movie to watch with friends, family, or just by yourself.

Much better than I expected. I thought it would be a silly 'Men in black' thing. Much more human, more like 'close encounters.
  • Amazing
