Following the murder of her father by hired hand Tom Chaney, 14-year-old farm girl Mattie Ross sets out to capture the killer. To aid her, she hires the toughest U.S. marshal she can find, a man with "true grit," Reuben J. "Rooster" Cogburn. Mattie insists on accompanying Cogburn, whose drinking, sloth, and generally reprobate character do not augment her faith in him. Against his wishes, she joins him in his trek into the Indian Nations in search of Chaney. They are joined by Texas Ranger LaBoeuf, who wants Chaney for his own purposes. The unlikely trio find danger and surprises on the journey, and each has his or her "grit" tested.

  • Not as good as the original

    By Furutan1
The original had personality and humor. Damon isn't much better as the ranger than Campbell was and, Bridges brings no life to the character – very two-dimensional and unappealing. The only think I liked was that the ending was more like the book. The rest was just a remake.
  • Good but no where close to the original

This is a good movie, however it pales in comparison to the original with John Wayne and Robert Duvall in it. The chemistry between all of the characters in original just cannot be matched, nor can the beautiful sweeping landscapes. They kept the story fairly close, but they did change a few things that irked me. Please give the original a chance before you watch this remake.
  • High-quality acting, amazing picture, and dramatic story-line

True Grit began on the slow-side, but only to prepare the storyline for the confrontations and searching that takes place along the journey. The movie opens with a beautiful picture of a quiet small town, and continues with superb quality throughout the entire length of the film. Jeff Bridges had a brilliant southern accent as Sherif Cogburn, and Matt Damon did an incredible job with a supporting role as the dou's apprentice sidekick. It takes the whole movie for the characters to reveal how much grit they're willing to overcome so justice can be obtained.

True Grit is a classic that should be in every western lovers library! The story line, acting, scenery, and overall directing are truly spectacular. This quickly became a favorite in my house even amongst our kids. If you are looking for a realistic, gritty, western adventure with characters you can't help but to admire and share a laugh or two with them look no further.
  • Jeff Bridges does it justice..

I was a kid when "True Grit" with John Wayne came out. For us "old farts", that was the bar. I originally watched this movie having heard that it "wasn't as good" as the original from some of my friends. I couldn't disagree more. Both are wonderfully done movies.
