The show is at first confusing. Then it becomes interesting. Maybe, it is even on par with Dr Who with complicated content that seems to unravel its mystery in an amusing fashion. The story and the acting are superb. I could say more, but that would be a spoiler. I would say that to me at least, this is one of the best treasures which I have discovered on itunes among offerings that are not so well known. Bravo to all the cast and writers of this production.
Inspired By—Not True To
First, I absolutely loved this first season. Adored it.
It is very little, if anything at all, like the works of Douglas Adams.
And while it's sacrilege to cult of Adams & the Sacred Order of "The Books Are ALWAYS Better", I much prefer it to the source material.
Don't get me wrong—I liked the books enough. It had some quality Adams humour in it (I, too, liked the bit about the horse) but I always felt guilty & uncomfortable that I wasn't more in love with the story. It actually was difficult to read through with any sort of enthusiasm, which is a shame because every word & turn of phrase was absolutely brilliant in his Hitchhiker series. I felt like the Dirk Gently books were just. . . quaint.
This show is something else entirely. It's extremely American for Americans, but it has a bit of a Doctor Who meets Fargo or something sort of feel to it.
If you are looking for a straight adaptation of the novels, this series is not it. If you want to constantly compare it to the book and will be continuously disappointed if it isn't accurate to the letter, this is definitely not for you.
But if you accept that the spirit of Adams genius was simply a launching point for something very different altogether—an inspiration from vs a faithful retelling—you might find this series has loads to offer and can be quite brilliant in its own ways.
I absolutely loved it.
That's my two cents at any rate.
As bad as it gets these days
Total and complete nonsensical, gratuitously violent, self-indulgent crap.
Brilliant and riveting!
Exciting，funny and great performances.
Fantastic and Original
More of an homage to the Douglas Adams series, but phenomenally written, and prone to flights of unusual whimsy
with a steampunk edge. These characters are loveable misfits, deeply flawed outcasts trying to find meaning in a mad, unforgivingly strange storyline. Pure brilliance.
YEEEEESSS!! And the soundtrack is incredible!
By I love The Legend of Korra!
I highly reccomend this show to pretty much anyone I meet! I encourage people who love Douglas Adams's novels to watch this show, because although it is quite different, it is still an insanely increbible show. I am honestly barely maintaining sanity due to the fact that I now have to wait for who knows how long to get a season 2. Also, one of the things that is really sticking with me is the incredible score. I can't get enough of this high-energy techno music! I need an album of the score so I don't have to use up storage by keeping entire episodes on my phone! I LOVE DIRK GENTLY!!
Great but don't compare
It seems the only negative reviews are from those people who either read the books, or watched the previous series and are comparing the two (or three).
I didn't read the books.
I did watch the previous series and loved it. However, it has been so long I forgot much about it. If you go into this show not comparing them I feel you will really enjoy it. It's one of the best new shows out there in my opinion. And though I never read Dirk Gently, I have read other Adams' books. So yeah, the humor is different, but the show does have humor. It's quirky, interesting, and has left me wanting more. Can't wait for season 2.
Senseless and disappointing
By Dave Pig
I had hoped that this would sort itself out be a new take the brilliance of the original series. This pilot set the stage for the possibility of some interesting characters. It's all gone terribly wrong. Very disappointing.
This is a show that hits the mark on every metric: fantastic cast, unpredictable and imaginitive plot, atmospheric soundtrack, and just enough humour and irony to make this a show that Douglas Adams would be proud of. Alernatively scary and then hilarious, this is a show not to be missed!
Confusing episode numbering
Love this show, but hate that the "inside look" episodes are listed as actual episodes and not numbered like the bonus content (e.g. the trailer is #101). It's also annoying when I want to watch the third ep but it's listed as #7 because of this. Please fix!!
