Comedian Hari Kondabolu, the creator and star of this feature-length documentary, confronts his long standing “nemesis” Apu Nahasapeemapetilon – better known as the Indian convenience store owner on The Simpsons. Through this comedic cultural exposé, Kondabolu questions how this controversial caricature was created, burrowed its way into the hearts and minds of Americans and continues to exist – intact – twenty-eight years later.

Hari Kondabolu crushed it. I'm purchasing this on iTunes after just watching the documentary on TruTV. I realize that I'm more than his target audience as a 36 year old first generation Indian American growing up as teen of the 90s outside of NYC. His ability to bring about an hour long documentary to iTunes, multiple perspectives/expertise, the definition of patanking, and comedy to the real frustration around a flat single story/accents is unbelieveable for me even in 2017 (especially against an institution like The Simpsons.) Years ago I realized that I gave up hope on allowing my own children to watch Indiana Jones movies even though I loved them as a kid. When my children are older this documentary will make it easier for me to explain why, they won't completely undestand it when I force them to watch it next week. As a teacher, who was limited to white teachers for the first fifteen years of my schooling, you did it Hari, and hopefully the next generation of marginalized kids will see themselves in your work and build upon it.
